How to play Red Dog Poker

Amongst the many poker games, you will find a variant called Red Dog Poker which is an excellent game with very simple rules.

The ranking of the cards is exactly the same as for all poker games : Aces are superior to any other cards, no matter the suit, then come the Kings, the Queens, Jacks and the rest of the cards follow according to their values 10, 9, 8 etc...

Red Dog Poker is played with a deck of 52 cards, but only three of those are used in the game. The aim is to wager on the third card which is drawn. This is how a Red Dog game goes :

After placing your bet, you receive two cards.

- Consecutive Hand :

If these two cards are of a consecutive value (for example : 4 and 5), the game is considered a push and your wager is given back to you.

- Pair Hand :

When the two cards you are given are equal, they make a pair, you will receive a third card to complete your hand. If this third card is identical to the other two, this makes a three of a kind, you win and are paid 11 to 1 ! If you don't receive an identical third card, the game is declared a push and your original wager is returned.

In some Red Dog Poker games, you will also be able to bet that you third card will be superior or inferior to the first two cards.

-Non-consecutive hand :

When the two cards given out at the start have a difference (so they are not identical, nor consecutive), you can choose to double or "Raise" your initial wager. This is the only moment in Red Dog Poker where you can modify your initial wager. You can also decide to Stand.

In order to win, the third card which is then drawn has to be surrounded by the other two. Your winning will be higher if the difference between the two cards (the spread) is small, indeed, because it will be more difficult to get a third card which is just in between the other two.

Here is an example : if the first two cards are 7 and 10, the spread is 2. This means only two cards can fill in the blank in order for you to win, in this case you have to get either an 8 or a 9.

The Red Dog Poker rules say that a spread of one card can make you win 5 to 1. If the spread is two, you will get a 4 to 1 winning. A difference of 3 cards will be a 2 to 1 payoff and any spread which is more than 3 will make you win 1 to 1.

Here is the paytable for this game :

Spread is 1

5 to 1

Spread is 2

4 to 1

Spread is 3

2 to 1

Spread is 4 or more

1 to 1

Three of a kind

11 to 1

To make out a strategy, this will depend on your way of playing casino games in general : daring or cautious... Nevertheless, a big part of the game rests on pure luck !

The probability of winning becomes higher with the spread in a non-consecutive hand. But the higher the spread, the less important are the winnings. And inversely, your winnings can be huge if your card is within a very tight spread, but unfortunately, this is harder to obtain. Therefore you will have to be audacious and daring to play and win at Red Dog Poker !
